A Way Maker along the South West Coast Path

The UK’s longest and best-loved National Trail

The Walk of a Lifetime

With 19th century origins as a coastguard patrol route to restrict smuggling, the modern day South West Coast Path is England’s longest waymarked footpath. It runs for 630 miles, from Minehead on the edge of Exmoor to the shores of Poole Harbour.

It’s various segments are enjoyed by many millions of visitors throughout the year, who come to marvel at the natural scenery on offer. This is the true wonder of the South West connecting visitors with some of the finest coastal landscapes to be found anywhere in the world.

Its truly special nature is reflected in the array of official designations it has collected over the years. As it threads its way around the coastline, the Coast Path passes through a number of National Nature Reserves and Heritage Coasts, five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, two World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO designated Biosphere reserve and a Geopark, as well as one National Park.

The SWCPA is a charity that has been caring for the path since it was first created in 1973. It relies on memberships and donations to support, restore, improve and maintain the path as well as give voice to the communities it connects.

What is a Way Maker?

Lobb Fields has joined over 300 other Way Maker businesses and organisations helping to preserve the Coast Path.

We support the charity in its work to care for the Path which is facing increasing challenges due to coastal erosion, climate change and increased footfall. Care for the protection of the trail’s unique wildlife environment and make its health-giving benefits as widely accessible as possible to all.

As a walker you can have your "passport" stamped at Lobb Fields to mark your progress along the route.

The Salt Path

"The Salt Path" is a memoir, travel, and nature book by Raynor Winn, published in 2018 by Penguin Books. It tells the story of Winn and her husband Moth, who, after losing their home and livelihood due to Moth's terminal illness, decide to walk the 630 miles of the South West Coast Path from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall. They carry only the essentials for survival and live wild in the coastal landscape, experiencing the healing power of nature and the meaning of home.

In 2025 a feature movie release stars Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs as Ray and Moth as they take on the 630 mile journey. The cinematography by Hélène Louvart is noted for its immersive landscapes and soundscapes, contributing to the film's authenticity.
